| Um, quakes? |

...I was on livejournal about to post about... something, but then there was an earthquake. A very small one, Alej and I placed it a 2 on 7 scale, but still scary nonetheless for a now-Floridian who encounters these forces of nature at an absolute minimum, that is to say never. Also, this was the second one in three days, which seems ridiculously often but apparently that's normal around them parts?
It felt like a somewhat smooth swaying from side to side. I felt it at first in my spine, told Alejandro, he didn't feel anything, but then he did and things like hangers, the Chinese lantern flowers, and the light string started swaying around the room as it got more intense, and the feeling changed from a boat-like swaying to a shaking. It's a very strange feeling. You know that everything around you is a solid, the wooden floor, the soil underneath, the walls, but they function more like water. Standing on the floor I could actually feel "ripples" in the wood under my feet. It's kind of unsettling. Also, as I've been typing, we've felt two more, albeit miniscule, ones.
I'm sure it's absolutely nothing to worry about but it's pretty weird feeling indeed.
EDIT: checked the news this morning, and what we felt as a (2) in Tokyo was actually 6.8 earthquake that hit northeastern Japan. It had to be the same one, as the time in the news story reflects when we felt it.
Apparently, even Fukuda was startled in his bedroom.

Japanese advertisement (the television kind) is pure. cinematic. gold.
Also, Kamakura is easily sliding up to my top ten, nay top five favorite places I have ever been to. With lush flora, sticky humid yummy Florida-like air, beaches opening to the Pacific Ocean, over a dozen Zen & Nichiren temples and Shinto shrines, a giant open-air Buddha statue, delicious food, and easy train access (public transport omg!) to Tokyo, I could easily see myself living there. Plus, the prefecture even offers monetary allowances for parents raising young children, single parents and parents of handicapped children. A bit of a socialist heart without the whining. Oh yes, they also had a human pulled rickshaw/tourist guide (what!?). You should have seen the legs on that man. Oh man. When he wasn't pulling the rickshaw adorned with the two Japanese women with porcelain laughter, he was explaining the scenery and impressively seemed like he was geniuenly having fun while doing it.
Hooray!
-- Wikipedia tells me: the word rickshaw actually originated from the Japanese word jinriksha (jin = human, rik = strength, sha = vehicle) which literally translates to human powered vehicle. Who knew? |
